Poor Fuel Economy
« on: 22 February 2010, 13:12:17 »

Hi all,

Just floating this question on here as I've got no-one to ask or anyone to check against.

I've got a T reg Omega 2.5 (BMW straight 6 engine) CD TD. I've been getting pretty shocking MPG out of it, as an example I put 20 litres in - drove it almost everywhere (where possible) under 2000rpm. 100 miles and empty.

I did the same again, 20 litres, driving as I used to drive my VW Bora TDI (fairly normally). 100 miles and empty.

Doesn't last 2 days if you're heavy footed!

So, 20 litres = 100 miles, which is pretty bad.

So, does anyone else on here have the same engine? What do you get out of it? The engine temperature sensor looks goosed as it's always cold - so I guess that's not helping, and it will be due a service - but those can't reduce the MPG by such a massive amount can they?

Look forward to your thoughts!

think the ecu thinks engine is cold so you will use more fuel, need to get it changed.engine temp sensor. :y

Auto or Manual? I've got a manual and in the cold weather doing the 3 miles each way to work in the cold it's averaging low 20's in MPG. Went to Lincoln last week and averaged 42mpg as it had chance to get properly hot.

It's early days since I took the chip out and put the standard one back in, but I reckon I'm getting around 30mpg. That's just local short stop/start type journeys.

Have you checked all of your cars air intake pipes, I mean are any loose or split?

I have always worked out my fuel consumption in gallons, so 20 litres would be about 4 gallons so 100 miles = 25 miles to the gallon, about average round town in the cold on short trips, which is about what i'm getting from a 2.0 litre..though my last count was 60 odd miles from 10 litres = 30mpg, Automatic set on economy,  it all depends...  :-/

I don't think so, I have both and the 2.2 is currently parked up, using the TD.
The MID (I know some will say don't go by that, but I do) on my 2.2 says 20mpg, and the MID on my TD currently says 31mpg. These figures are for short stop/start journeys on both cars. I would expect a more respectable 36mpg from the 2.2 and around mid 40's from the TD on longer motorway cruising type journeys.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to get the temperator sensor done, if it's still bad - it's going to have to go.

Was a quick steal at £500, but it is costing an absolute bomb to keep going. I've had VW diesels for the past 5 years because I regularly do 300 miles a week. The Omega is killing me in fuel costs. My Bora before this (that I had to get rid of due to redundancy) averaged 45+ MPG even with a heavy foot - and did Newcastle to Glasgow without moving on the fuel gague, and Newcastle - Windsor London - Newcastle in a day and still had enough for a weeks commuting (nearly 700 miles from a full tank)

60 litres in the Omega got me 400 motorway miles before it cried for more.

Time to bribe the bank manager!
