Gates cambelt kit
« on: 28 February 2010, 11:17:59 »

Yesterday I fitted a kit (as above) and when I noticed it had the markings on (compared to the last one I got form a dealer) I was pleased.
So I got the double lines aligned with the crank, moved the singles up to cams 1 and 2, and then moved on to 3 and 4. However, I saw the white marks for cams 3 and 4 were several teeth out, more than any adjustment would allow.

Then I saw some pale yellow lines on the cambelt. They looked like they were offset by the amount the white lines on cams 3 and 4 were out. So, I aligned the double yellow lines to the crank, and then up on cams 1 and 2 I noticed the white lines wer out but I could now align the two single yellow lines. Once I did that I noticed the white lines for cams 3 and 4 (no yellow lines here) could be aligned easily.

I had only ever heard of aligning the white lines, and even the instructions (which I didn't use by the way, only later as an afterthought) said to align the double white lines with the crank.

Anyway, it's all timed and tensioned correctly now; a few turns of the crank maintained this so I'm happy.

Has anyone else noticed this with dual markings? Do Contitech kits have this 'feature'?

I've hear of both markings on the V6 belt.  i seem to think the yellow ones are the ones to "use"

FYI the VX belts are unmarked because they are really not needed.  the markings can only get you roughly right, the cam timing tool is needed to get is spot on (and getting spot on does make a difference)

I only had a little more trouble with the unmarked belt but it was almost like the dual markings on this added confusion.
Anyway, it's a nice feeling when the timings and tension are kept after a few turns, which is the main things, markings or not.
