My late dad-in-law's 1998 Omega 2.0 auto saloon emits a very loud clonk when driven over any vicious speed bump or pothole, but is otherwise well-behaved. Garage inspection has not revealed any worn bushes. Any ideas?

Try looking at the drop links to the front antiroll bar.

I found that the drop links rattle over little undulations.

The big clunk over roadhumps (or on vicious brake application) is usually soft wishbone bushes. One of them has a metal insert to limit the movement and when the bush wears you get metal to metal contact.

Hi, would also say drop links. Garages tend to check for front end play with the car in the air (weight off wheels) which in the case of drop links will hide the wear. Easy to change and cheap, got mine from autofactors for under £10 per side almost 5 yrs ago and still good.

In my experience, I'm with Andy H - droplinks tend to 'rumble' on uneven surfaces, really knackered wishbone buses clonk on speedbumps.  I guess if droplinks really knackered, they may cause this?

My general advice is to look for play in wishbones and antirollbar bushes, if none found, change droplinks.
