Levelling light
« on: 08 March 2010, 07:06:33 »

Hey guys,

I have a 2001 Cadillac Catera, the North American version of a 2001 Opel Omega MV6.

I have a problem with my levelling light flashing when driving with 3 people in the back and a loaded trunk (long driving/travelling).  The light doesn't start to flash until 1 hour or so into the trip... but when the car is shut off, the light stays off until 1 hour when it starts to flash again.

The car is fine unless I have a the back seats filled with passengers and a loaded trunk.  It has no problem with only a loaded back seats and empty trunk.

I'm going long driving again with the family and would like to fix this problem before going on the trip.

I'm thinking it could be my rear air shocks, but I'd like to make sure it's not the lines, sensors, or pump first.

Anyone know where I can find the air pump?  And is there a way to test it?

How do I know if my air pump is working?  My levelling light turns of when the car is started, but then shuts off.  I often hear a air compressor noise upon startup, but I'm not sure if that's the air compressor or the smog pump.  Is the compressor easy to hear when driving on a freeway?  because I don't recall hearing anything before the levelling light begins flashing during my long trips with a loaded back seats and luggage.

uk omegas dont have a level light, and self leveling suspension is only fitted to Elites, mv6 dont have it.

On a uk car i would suspect an air leak or possibly a  sensor issue. There is a guide on basic testing of self levelling suspension, moving the level arm basickly.

level pump on omega is in the drivers side wing, forward of the front wheel.

by level light,  you mean suspension level height problem? (sorry UK cars don't have this)

As Chris mentions MV6 over here does not have self leveling suspension, but sounds US does if you have air shocks (assuming they are standard)

Is the pump working as it should? Cold start up you should hear it whir into action for a few seconds

Of course in yours it will be the other side

What I meant was physically the same side but logically the other. It will be on your passenger side.

The 'Catera' is 'like' a UK - V6 3.0/3.2 auto elite + MV6 combo, all the good bits plus one or two more.
There are some members on OOF, there are others on 'Yahoo Catera Owners'.
Regarding 'self leveling' pump under left hand wing (looking from the front)
There is a 'unit check test' detailed on the forum.
