Auto Gearbox Problems
« on: 05 March 2010, 17:55:34 »

Hi Guys - newbie here so please give me some slack  ;)

Today i got an Omega - taking a bit of a chance on it, as the gears arnt running correctly.

The auto wont appear to go beyond 3rd, and wont go beyond 60.  It also sometimes take 2 attempts to get it into reverse...

The previous owner said it ran perfectly until he got stuck in snow, and tried getting out by rocking the car using reverse/first.

I see from the manual there is an ice mode - which I presume would have this effect on the drive? Lower torque/speed...

If this is the case, how do i get it off?

Thanks in advance

The snow/ice button is on the left hand side of the
gear lever. With it on the car will start off in third.

Hi,

If I'm reading your post correctly then you should be able to switch off 'Snow Mode' by pressing the button to the left of the gear shift - it has a snowflake symbol on it. However - not sure what model you have but hope this helps.
Good luck!

Sorry  - it's a 2.2 16v

Not sure if it could be the snow mode then... as it starts in 1st but won't go past 3rd, and wont exceed 60mph

I reckon selector switch is worth checking, but TBH sounds like it could be a damaged box - the rocking may have done something bad

Well today I popped into town, and went to the vauxhall garage.  They have advised me the gearbox sump gaskets are discontinued... hmmm

Well i bought some ATF fluid (not from vauxhall) and drained out what i could from the level plug by jacking it up at pass. side, then following the instructions on here...

Still appears to be no improvement.

Thought i would explain in a bit more detail what is happening with the gear stick lights:

P = All lights on
R = R light is on
N = All lights on
D = 3 light comes on then all lights go on after a few seconds
3 = 3 light is on
2 = All lights on
1 = All lights on

I'm wondering whether this is a problem with the gearbox ECU?  Where will i find this?  And can they be replaced easily?

Thanks

If it's gonna cost mega bucks to fix it, you might want to consider converting it to manual!

is it dificult to convert to a manual?

TBH - i quite like the auto box, and the unusal thing is, it isn't malfunctioning as such as the gears stil change smoothly etc...

I have an auto specialist local (which out local vauxhall dealer sub contract to - as they dont service auto's)... may be worth a visit
