idiling probs

i,ve taken the throttle body off and cleaned thoroughly , also the iacv too . the two breather pipes , also cleaned the small jet from small breather to throttle body . car idiled smoothly and drove nice for a few miles , then when car upto running temp of 85 /90 . car starts to occaisionally idle up and down from 500 + to 1500 revs , then drops to a smooth 500+ . any forth coming help would be much appreciated.

thats quite a big jump in rpm, i'd check the throttle body butterfly is free moving and not getting stuck

thanks i,ll have a look at it tommorow , it did seem quite strongly sprung when i cleaned it but did,nt seem to be stuck  .

If the revs are going up and down on there own then it wont be the throttle butterfly, more likely an air leak.

Check for any stored fault codes with a trusty paperclip.   :)

as i,m no mechanic but a novice could you give me some pointers on the air leak front ie where to start. cheers.

check all the breather pipes, throttle body, air filter all all secure, with the bonnet up and engine running run your hands over the throttle body areas, feel & listen for any leaks.

Symptoms i had with sticking throttle body was approaching junctions, you slow to a stop, butterfly does not close all the way, keeps idle high, then after a while sorts itself out, and back to normal idle.

thanks for the advice .don,t seem to be any obvious air leak,s . lubricated butterfly and seem,s better , time will tell.

Make sure the throttle cable hasn't been adjusted to compensate for idling.

the circlip on the throttle adjuster is on the 7th notch , working from the rear of the adjuster. does that sound aout right?

You really need to ensure there is sufficient free play/slack.  One persons seventh notch is anothers 10th......   ;D
