2.2 dti won't start, please help the old man
« on: 02 March 2010, 21:35:46 »

Hi, my Dad's just bought a 2.2dti omega estate, which went fine for a couple of weeks, now just turns over and won't start.  Everything else looks fine, no fault codes etc, just sounds like theres no diesel getting to the cylinders.  Was told that there is a pump in the tank that should start up when you turn the ignition on, but can't hear any noise from that area.  Does this sound accurate?  Took the boot carpet up, took off an inspection plate, and found 5"ish round bit with fuel flow and return, and four pin connector, but all looking a bit rusty so didn't want to disturb without a bit of advice.  Cheers

There's no pump in the tank. The only pump a 2.2 diesel has is the injector pump.

Its quite common on these for the fuel to drain back to the tank if there is an air leak in the fuel return pipes, injector seals or leaking fuel filter.

Worth a try, but I've never had a diesel that wouldn't start eventually even if all the glow plugs have had it.  Nor one with an air leak that wouldn't pump it through eventually.  We've tried over and over to get it going incase it was fuel leaked back (parked nose up on hill), but spose we'll have to tow it onto the flat and have a go.  Should the fuel pump start with just the ignition on to pressurise the pipes?

It takes forever cranking the engine to get the fuel pumped through. I have fitted a bulb pump to mine to hand pump it after i've changed the fuel filter.

the 2.2dti doesnt have a fuel pump just an injector pump which is driven by the engine turning, so you have got to crank the engine to pump the fuel , i`ve changed fuel filters on both the vectra and omega 2.2 dti and each time had to crank engine for ages to get it to start,
i know years ago to get a diesel to start i`ve sprayed easy start into the air intake and that would get it to fire up, not sure if its the right thing to do with modern diesel engines tho.

You can still do it but make sure the glow plug light has gone out first  ::)

Cheers, might be getting confused, was told it was a common rail diesel, take it that its not if the injection pump is run off the crank.  Can't find a haynes for it either, what manual would you recommend?

Sure Kevin Wood mentioned it was a bit parky this morning. "rather Ice, bugger" I believe was the polite version....

Sounds suspiciously like a dodgy copy of the GM TIS to me which is copyrighted to General Motors and costs a hell of a lot more that £20 but gets pirated on a certain auction site for a hell of a lot less.
