EML flashing.... then gone!!
« on: 09 March 2010, 22:01:20 »

Just spoke to my dad telling him I'm getting a coil pack for him.....due to this post: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1267524543) ..... and he said that while driving today, the EML light started flashing..... continue to flash for a good 10 mins..... then went out completely!!

He now says the car drives fine and there is no missfire!!! :o

Haven't had a chance ot read the codes.... but what coudl be happening here?!?! Is it the calm before the storm....

Is flashing EML meaning CAT is struggling ... or CAT is dying...?

I reckon for what its worth is all that is is a loose connection somewhere. Hopefully its cured its self because theirs nothing worse than an intermitent fault.
Check for fault codes as well because its probley stored it when the eml come on so at least you know where to start looking. :)

Read the fault codes previously (as per my other post) - and there were misfire codes 0300 and 0302 - but that was when the light has been on continuously for teh last 2 weeks - and there was a definate missfire.... now the misfire is gone and the EML has gone out..... but was preceeded by the EML going mental and flashing....

What does the flashing EML mean?

A flashing emissions light (picture of engine) means that a fault that could harm the catalytic converters is present. :o

First step is to do the pedal trick and find out what fault codes are stored.

Thanks Kevin, I thought as much...

Have not yet had a chance to check any new fault codes on there since the light has gone out.....

Strage don't you think that the EML was on constantly for 2 weeks with the misfire going off in Cyl2... then the EML starts flashing yesterday..... goes off after 10 mins - and stays off.... and the physical/audible misfire is gone!!  :o

Check the fault codes, but again, you need to sort that coil pack. When mine was on its way, the emissions light would flash sometimes - that's warning you that fuel is getting into the cat - if you read the Omega manual, it says to lay of the gas in such a situation until the light glows constantly... it is then okay to drive with the light on solid, but needs checking asap. A restart can stop the flashing/solid light, but it can come back at any time.
I sat in a traffic queue for over an hour with no light or flashing, but the day before, it was on constant, and the day after, it flashed until I followed the above procedure, then it glowed. Change that pack, mate :y

Yep, I agree. My car was doing some strange things, emissions light was on all the time, and flashed for a few seconds when I put my foot hard down, followed by a horrendous misfire at times (not all the time). Judging by the amount of water I had in the coil pack, it's a wonder it worked at all. It's worth having a look at, at least. It's an awkward job but not a difficult one.  :y

my guess .. and it's no more than that .. is the following may have happened ...

EML light on due to fairly regular misfire. Something .. damp ???... causes misfire to get worse ... so even more unburned fuel reaches cats ... EML starts to flash as warning of this (sensed by lambda sensor), lambda sensor also does "something" via the ECU in an attempt to correct the problem - might be as simple as increasing ignition primary voltage, changing the mapping or changing the "learned" values ??? - this has an effect on the system and casues the misfire to stop, which clears the fault at the lambda so the EML light goes out. The short period of whatever the ECU did in response to the problem has had a lasting effect ....  but for how long ????

Just my protracted thoughts ...

This was my thinking as well...

Read the new fault codes asap.... if light comes back or misfire comes back, will get that coil pack changed for certain.  :y

I had this with a Vectra. One day light on and misfiring.Next day ok. Went from London to Sheffield on a misfiring engine and it just wouldn't clear itself. Replaced the coil pack after a fortnight of running on 3 of 4 cylinders and thought my cat would be mullered but it sailed through an MOT a month later ;)Not to be recommended though :o
