Do you mean cam cover gaskets?
Oil leaking from there will often drip onto the manifolds, burn, and smoke.
If the car is 'groggy' it might be low on oil.

Does the smoke smell accrid and bitter, or does it smell slightly sweet?

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

If VERY recent then spilt oil/old oil takes a while to burn off.

I'm assuming you have checked that the new ones are not leaking .. especially at the semi-circular cut outs at the back .. where the black sealant goes .. ??? Very easy for the passenger side ones not to seat right .....  been there got the T shirt .. :(
