Just had WIM inspection and help / advice needed
« on: 13 March 2010, 17:56:38 »

As title says, i have come back from wim and tony says i need two new front bushes. He said it is just the bushes that need replacing and he recalls there being a bmw compatible vertical front bush available?

Can anyone recommend where to source the front bushes and also somone to fit them?

trouble with pressing bushes,
needs at least a 10 ton press,
the correct drifts to fit the bushes to press onto.
if the press slips and damages the new oil filled(?) bush while pressing your own wishbones your buggered.

Usual approach is to fit new wishbones keep your old ones and get them pressed later as spairs. Or source a second hand set with good steering knuckles and pre press new bushes into them, then fit those once successfuly pressed.

Obviously you want to avoid removing your wishbones, only to find you cant press them or the new bush gets damaged or whatever problem arrises, and you've got no good wishbones to refit, the cars still up on stands and your buggered.

Plus Markdtm busted the magic press at Newentbeforelast so that options out afaik.

Personally i cant believe the prices of a press for what they are, its just a bottle jack and some suitably arranged girders.

Thanks Chris :y, it sounds more complicated than i thought.

I was hoping to keep costs to minimum but if i was to buy the front wishbones (with bushes already in) do you know where to get a good quality set and who could fit them for me?

Lemforder wishbones around £110 for a pair from autovaux. Took me about 4 hours to change them, but I had never done the job before and I did have a few problems with bolts that were seized ... :(

word from the wise.
if you plan to keep the car for a few years when you replace the wishbones before you put the bolts back slap loads of copper slip on the bolts. :y

Thanks for the advice and I have just read Bumbazor ordered Lemforders for 62 each.
I am not confident to fit these - can anyone recommend who could fit them for me?

Since a geometry check/setup is needed after changing the wishbones, I booked it into WIM. They changed both wishbones then put it straight up onto Tony,s ramp for him to work his magic. I don't recall the cost now but it didn't break the bank. 8-)

if you can before you tighten up the bolts get the car on its wheels (ride height, all the weight on them) then do the bolts up, then get the tracking done, there are lots of places that dont like doing omegas as the track control arms seize up and are a pig to undo,it seems to pay if you can loosen them before you go for the tracking. :)
