I have a false "Coolant Level Low" warning on my 1999  2.5 CD petrol Omega. The local garage says that a new Coolant Box is required at £50 plus VAT plus labour. Does anybody know where the sensor is located and can it be changed?

The sensor is located in the header tank, you could stick a screwdriver or something similiar in the header tank and gently move it around, this may free up the sensor, it has worked for me in the past. However, it is more than likely a new header tank will be required, as the sensor is built into the tank, so you'll have to renew the whole thing. Not sure on the price of one, someone can confirm for you 
Alternatively, just leave it and check coolant level frequently.

You can't buy the sensor from GM as it only comes as part of the header tank.

The sensor is fitted in from the bottom of the header tank and some of the guys on here have a mooch around breakers yard and pop the sensors out.

Some times it works other times it doesn't and it a new headre tank.

Fitting is easy just a couple of hose clips but do the job when the engine is cold and remember to top up with red antifreeze at a 50/50 mix

Some of the breakers on here should be able to help with a second hand one, if not then the trade cost of a new header tank is £25.66 + VAT

Rip off merchants, find another garage.

£32 (inc VAT) and about 20 minutes to fit.
