2 Comments:

1) If the pipe on the right of the engine by the battery gets hot quickly then you have been conned on the stat change....

2) How the hell can a failed headgasket cause overheating..

Time to speak to some people who know the basics me thinks....so welcom to the site  :y ;D

A faulty stat would most likely cause underheating problems.  As mentionned points to a blocked rad, try and acquire one off here from a good source such as RobseyMV6 or Darth Loo Knee.  I have had similar issues to you and it turn out to be just that.

The stat controls the flow of coolant to the rad.

It remains shut until the opening temperature is reached at which point it starts to open and allows coolant to flow through the rad where it is cooled before being returned to the rear of teh block.

So, if the stat is working, the top right engine hose will saty barely wamr until operating temp is reached......then it will suddenly go hot (takes quite a few minutes)

So, if it getting hot very quickly, there is either no stat (seen this to many times by those who have not managed to grasp the concept of how a car cooling system works!) or ist failed open (the default state for a failure).

To me, it also sounds like a blcoekd rad.....which a compitent mechanic would diagnose with an infrared temperature sensor
