Hand brake shoes
« on: 22 March 2010, 22:44:14 »

Hi guys.
Some advice required.
In the last few days I replaced my old hand brake shoes.

The rear left wheel since then has a 'whining' on metal sound which seems to happen when I'm braking (not with handbrake)
Tonight pulling into my street the 'whining' noise was very noticible and rather embarrassing as I could hear it without a wndow opened, God knows what it's like to the person on the outside.
Any ideas what I've done wrong or what could be happening with a cure please?

The noise only happens on the rear left. Rocking the car proves this too.

Thank you in adance  :y

Hiya pal, sounds like maybe something hasn't been put back together quite right. If there is no effect to the handbrake, then I would suspect it may be either the disc itself or the caliper. Is the disc set back squarely on the hub?
I'm no expert and I guess someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly with the right answer, but in the meantime maybe you should take the pads and caliper off and make sure the disc is ok.
Just a thought!  :y

hi guys thank you for replying so quickly.

It could be the disc not being placed back properly, will have to look in the morning...the little retaining screw that holds it in place had to be drilled out because it just wouldnt budge no matter what was tried. so the only thing holding that on properly is the wheel nuts.

The caliper I do believe was secured properly.

No it isnt brake squealing. when the car is parked i can rock it and the whining still happens. It sounds like metal on metal...hence maybe it is the disc not placed back on fully or the retaining screw missing could be the fault??

The retaining screw shouldn't make much difference, I think it's only there to locate the disc. The wheel bolts should hold the disc securely in place

Did you put the pads back in the way they came out? Did you use copper grease on the necessary parts?

Did you fully carry out the rear brake maintenance procedure?

On my last car (also 1994) a brake shoe adjuster retainer pulled out of the backplate. The shoe retaining spring ended up wedged at the bottom making an embarrassing shrieking noise.

The keyhole slots in the early backplates are a known weakness. On later cars the retainers are pushed through from behind and slotted washers are used instead.

Hello guys
Thank you all for your sound advice and help.
I didn't know about copper greasing, can anyone point where exactly the grease is placed? I am aware of the danger of putting it on the wrong parts.

The noise is definately metal on metal squealing. So the disc could be not placed on it properly. It's pouring with rain here so can't look at it just yet, but will do asap and post back.

Cheers  :y

I had a similar problem a few years ago and turned out to be a handbrake cable issue.
