Climate/Air Con not kicking in...
« on: 26 March 2010, 22:33:42 »

Typical - first day where I've needed air con, it ain't worked!!  >:(

I know the compressor doesn't kick in if the temp is below 5degC, but even in winter (when the temp is 5 or above) I knock the ECO off on the climate control panel for at least half my journey, just to keep everything nice n lubricated (ooh err...!  :-[  ;D )

It was working fine this morning (rev's dipping slightly when ECO turned off), but on my way home from work, when I turned ECO off when I got in the car, I noticed the rev's didn't drop.  Tried it another couple of times, but no joy.

The fans kick in as they should when the coolant temp gets to 90degC on the gauge.

When I got home, I lifted the bonnet and turned ECO off again.  The compressor wasn't spinning, and the fans weren't kicking in.  I had a similar issue in my last Mig, where the compressor wouldn't kick in, but the fans did - took it for a re-gas, and it worked fine.  On my Mig before that one, neither the air con compressor nor the fans kicked in with ECO off - I traced that to a blown fuse 14, which I changed and then it worked fine.

Fuse 14 is fine (first thing I checked, given the fans weren't kicking in either).

Anybody got any ideas???

Cheers folks  :y

sounds like the gas pressure in the system has dropped low enough for the pressure switch to shut down the compressor

Cheers chaps  :y

But I thought that even with naff-all gas, the fans would kick in with ECO off?  :-/

nope, when the pressure drops it kills the lot except for the heater fan,the heater will still work normally just if you lower the temp controls you can't go cold.mine had a leak which I have fixed and I pressured it up with compressed air to check it,with air pressure in the system the compressor cuts in and the fans run(briefly so I didn't 'dangle berries' the compressor)

Hmmm, bugger bugger!  That has got me thinking now...

When I took me Mig round to AndyB's why he (very kindly indeed  :y) sorted oil change out for me, he noticed a dust-cap was missing from one of the air-con filling points.

He unscrewed the other one that was in place (he was going to see if it fitted the missing one, so he could size it against any he had knocking about), but it started hissing a bit, so it was tightened back up sharpish!  ;D

Andy - if per chance you see this bud - if I remember rightly, you mentioned somebody else on the forum had a similar problem, and it's just the valve that needs changing, not the whole pipe?

Can't remember who it was can you, so I can see if they have the part no?  It'd be useful to have the Part No for when I go to see one of the, ahem, two Lesley's on the parts desk  ;D  ::)  :y
