I realise the pad sensor is the connection to warn of low fricton material but where does this sit and is it really required for a pad change? I'm not worried about saving a few quid especially with brakes but just a bit surprised.

Yes, they always snap taking the calliper up, they clip onto the metal part of the spring on the pad which pushes the pad down snug by calliper arm.
