Auto box service.
« on: 05 April 2010, 20:48:49 »

Hi all.

I have just got a 2nd hand ar35 autobox for my miggy(very kindly delivered yesterday by Ross(broomies Mate),as mine leaks.

What should I do to it before replacing mine, i.e. any seals that I should do as it is on the floor etc.

Cheers, MadMark73.

And also how easy wil it be to change as only got ramps and axle stands.

Can it be done that way or would it be easier to take engine and box out in one?

There will only be me doing it.

Unless someone would like some beer tokens for giving me a hand.

Ramps ok - ideally 2 people as box quite heavy - if not use trolley jack to lower/raise.

When I was in the same boat I took the decision to change the ATF and replace the thrust washer while it was off the car.

BE CAREFUL!!!

gearbox is heavy, and if it comes off the spline it can break tibia and fibia bones in your shin easily....would recommend NOT doing it on your own, but if you must/have to use a plank under TWO trolley jacks to share the load, and you will also find with two you can tilt the box to engage it easier. (broke mine a few years ago doing just the same as you in my drive on my own)

Be safe.

.. and take the gearbox out and replace it with the torque converter fitted (i.e. unbolt the torque converter from the driveplate). Do not try to pull the gearbox off the torque converter nose in-situ as this can damage the bush and oil seal that it runs in.

I would check the condition of the torque converter nose (check for scoring) and also the seal and bush on the gearbox that this locates into before refitting.

Yes, fluid and filter change every 60K or so is advisable. :y

Thrust washer failure is a favourite, and if bits of it are found in the sump when doing the above a DIY repair is feasible.
