Change the Water Pump or not?
« on: 08 April 2010, 16:43:52 »

Cambelt change is due in the near future... May even get it done this weekend/Monday so...

Would you or wouldn't you? Changed at the last belt change (about 18 months ago) so I know it's history and the coolant has been flushed/changed since then too :y

Going to stick a new aux belt on this time at the current one has unknown history and is looking a little cracked.

with mine as its cambelt driven I change it every time with the belt, its not worth the risk. V6 one, not so bad, think they have gone up massively in price recently? If you know for sure it was changed last time i would wait till next one, if unknown i would change  :)

Water pump should easily last 80K, IMHO, so every other change seems like a plan. If it fails, not a disaster on a V6, just extra work.

If you were paying for labour for the cam belt job, and potentially for the repair if the pump fails then the equation might look different, of course.

Pretty much sums up how I feel... Not really a bad job to do if it does fail in between the next belt changes (if you are capable of DIY) :y

I thought the opinion would go this way but thought I'd ask ;)

Personally I would change the water pump at each Cambelt change for how much they cost seems false economy to me not too :)
My opinion thats all.....

End of the day you're competent with the spanners and know the history of the current waterpump so leave it till the next belt change.
Worst case it goes during the life of the new belt, just means an hour or two under the bonnet.
As said a different story if you're paying for the change.
