Wrong Engine Oil?
« on: 25 March 2010, 21:36:13 »

I just had my 2.2dti serviced today and the idiot mechanic used 10w 40 oil instead of 5w 30

Will this mess up my engine?

I'd say your 'idiot mechanic' used the correct oil. Fully synthetic 5w30 is for modern performance cars  ;)  ;)  :y

But fully synthetic is really a bit too 'thin'  ;)

OK throughout its whole service history 5w 30 oil has been used, will the change to the heavier viscosity make a difference?

Sounds correct, assuming you are not daft enough to leave servicing to 10,000m

diesel oil needs regular changing

Any particular reason why the vauxhall dealer services my car has received since 2003, have used 5w 30 oil if the 10w 40 is better suited?

Its bothering me.

Personally I believe that fully synthetic is the right oil to use for a quad cam V6.

I switched my last V6 from semi-synthetic to fully-synthetic at 140,000 miles. The tappets were taking a while to quieten after a cold start and I had cleaned out the breathers and replaced the cam cover gaskets.

When I got rid of the car last year it had done 200,000 miles and was still running sweetly. I hadn't touched the breathers again and as far as I know they were still clear.

If fully synthetic is burnt it causes less soot and gunge than semi synthetic so even (especially?) on a worn engine it results in a cleaner engine.

At VX trade club prices (£48.87 for 4 x 5L) it doesn't cost much more than semi-synth  :y

Becasue that is the vx recommended oil.....but, its ok to use the 10W 40 seni synth and change it more often.

My V6 for isntance has an oil change every 5K miles....using 5W30 oil

After trawling through the net and noticing my car is not running as smoothly since its oil change (used 5w 30 throughout its life and changed to 10w 40 in recent service), it seems the that oil largely recommended for the 2.2 dti engine is 5w 40.  Still not clear to me why vauxhall have been servicing the car using 5w 30 when it is not even identified on their oil selection chart:
