Euro Trip advice
« on: 09 April 2010, 13:51:38 »

Hi,
Next week we undertake a charity rally (www.scumrun.com) round europe in our NYC Taxi V6 Elite, Please check out www.justgiving.com/7 for pics and info and if any of you can spare a couple of pounds to sponsor us that would be great! The charity is Clic Sargent and does great work for children with cancer. Any money donated through Justgiving goes direct to the charity and does not fund the rally in any way.
Anyway the reason for the post is that I after some advice on what spares, if any, we should carry and what I should change on the car as precausion prior to the trip.
The car is running great at the moment apart from a small rocker cover oil leak.

Many thanks in advance for any help offered.
Regards,
Steve

Make sure the cambelt kit is changed before you go and fix that rocker leak. clean out breathers at same time

Spares - carry a crank sensor and a HBV!

Done a few Europe tours, and would recommend:
Full toolkit, thermostat, gaffer tape, lots of tape, hose clips, cable ties, tin foil, 3x2 litre pop bottles full of water, oil top up, PlusGas/grease/PTFE/lubricant, sandpaper and file, string, rope, various bits of electrical wire, old coathanger, 35mm film containers with Swarfega, Vaseline, Gunk, talc, a good variety of self tapping srews, nuts, bolts and fixings, a big tyre lever or crow-bar, old rubber floor mat to lie/kneel on, magnetic extendable picker-upper, footpump, tyre weld, wind up torch and plug in 12v lantern.

I always take clingfilm and or clear plastic (like florists use) for broken grass repair, basic "My Naff Code Reader" diagnostics or similar reader (taking lap-top?).

Also the legal bits: all original car, personal, insurance and MOT docs, plus copies and set of copies left at home, hi-viz vest for each passenger, first aid kit, bulb kit, GB sticker or icon on reg. plates, fire extinguisher etc.

Also EHIC card, trip insurance, phrase books, spare camera with film and notebook for evidence gathering if you have accident.

Think that's most of it.  Hope you've got an estate for all of the above  ;D ;D

Meant to say car should be ship-shape before you go, a few motorway trial runs help.

As said, a full service, cooling system check and essential maintenance should be done well in advance.

Check tyre pressures for loading and learn how to do the Euro-light switch conversion at home before you leave  :y
