HEATERS.....Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
« on: 09 April 2010, 11:18:02 »

Before M' James came and helped me out with my cambelt, my heater was poor, to say the least, pulled off the vac pipe from the HBV, and flushed the matrix. BRILL! instant heater. So, when doing all the recent work, changed HBV too, therefore, heater should be fixed, yes?....NO.
Reset the climate control, new coolant, and antifreeze, left it ticking over for a hour with no cap, squeezed hoses, heater on HOT, no sodding warmth. Not a bit. bled off all pressure when warmish, and  took off matrix hoses to bleed out air, all pipes now warm, only warm. matrix clear, water just doesnt get that hot. 50% antifreeze mix, what next??

(just as well the weather is warm.....)

Somebody?

Gonna have to pull the vac tube again and plug it, kinda defeats the object of fitting a new HBV, doesn't it???

Grrrrr.

I've had this in some cases before, whereby the matrix needs to be flushed, then reverse fushed - and so on...... repeatedly...

There is an excellent flushing agent available - I cannot recall what it's called, maybe someone can confirm....

James, I've flushed this damn matrix back and forth 3 times now, flow is brilliant, and the only thing I can think of is :
could the pipes on the HBV be reversed somehow?
is the thermostat buggered?
Is the car trying to tell me something........

Gonna try reversing the pipes, but reluctant to put my water flush through it in case its a bit strong and causes MORE probs, or even causes HG fail...........

Top hose through bulkhead to top outlet of HBV, bottom to bottom outlet

Seems reasonable from the outset - however when we fitted the new valve, I did check the top matrix pipe goes to the top outlet on the HBV - so, that aspect is correct.

You get heat when removing the vacc pipe, and the temp gauge reads OK, so I'd say this is unlikely.

Gonna try reversing the pipes

I wouldn't personally - as we know they are correct in current formation.

________

In a nutshell - when the vaccum is removed from the HBV, this is when heat enters the matrix, and the cabin.

Can you confirm whether, with the climate settings on "Hi", there is a vaccum or not, at the HBV pipe?

If you get heat when you pull that pipe, it may be a fault in the vacc connections in the bulkhead?

Yep - this is how it is currently setup  :y

Possibly your controller is not controlling the vac needed to move the HBV ???  ie .. faulty controller ??

As said above, there should only be a vacuum going to the hbv when heat is not required by either driver or passenger.

If vacuum is getting to hbv when controls are set to high suspect possible fault in vac solenoid which is immediately upstream of hbv and found behind glovebox, left hand end of heater unit, adjacent to identical (ie can be used to test operation :y) solenoid for recirc flap.

On the poverty spec with manual controls said solenoid is switched by 2 microswitches in series when both controls are set to min. With cc no doubt the signal is a bit more complicated but i'm confident the solenoid is the same.

Doable with glovebox in situ but for the sake of 10mins I`d remove it. Both solenoids are identical
