td or v6
« on: 18 April 2010, 21:01:25 »

I currently own a 2.5 td sloon, but i really need an estate. I've had 2 v6 auto saloons, the last one being an elite.
Is a td really worth having over a v6 with fuel prices being as they are, as v6's tend to be more readily available.
The only problems i've had with the v6's have been due to components being a nightmare to get too, coilpacks etc.
Any real world opinions on this?

The 2 v6's are cars i've owned in the past.
TD estates are thin on the ground, and come at a premium over v6's.

Never had a problem obtaining any part whatsoever for our old CDX, and that includes both new & secondhand parts.

Of course they come at a premium.
The UK are taking it up the ar$e from the government in fuel duty, and everybody knows that the oil burner will give better MPG than the petrol variant.

No, i mean parts being physically hard to get to, as in trying to get to the coilpack to diagnose a missfire etc.
And is the td really that more economical than a v6?

As above, never had a problem getting any part I needed, when I needed it.

How long is a piece of string?

Depends how you drive as to what you get.
On the days I drove our V6 like Miss Daisy, I was getting 28+ mpg without a problem.
However on the days I drove it normally you'd need to make sure you left school with qualifications that will make you more than minimum wage if you wanted to keep up.

Diesel is always moer economical than petrol.
Laws of physics unfortunately :(
on normal driving diesel of the roughly same power will always consume considerabely less.

If you're worried about the economy of the V6 then don't buy one. :(
You'll be constantly looking at the fuel gauge, or fuel comp. :-/
Only buy an Omega for the ride/drive/comfort :y

If economy is a large consideration ... go 2.5 V6 and then LPG it. Your "pence per mile" costs will drop by around 40%.
I am presently averaging 14.5 pence per mile, over 20,000 miles on a 3.2 V6 that does a LOT of towing ... with petrol at £1:22.9/litre round here ....  that is £5.58 per gallon then I'm getting the equivalent of 38.5 mpg !!!

If I didn't tow as much it would be a lot better still. So I have the power and fun of 3.2 V6 for the economy of a 2.2 diesel .. :)

From a fuel consumption point of view, it's a no brainer,  TD :y

Edit: Compared with a standard V6, not an LPG'd jobbie.

Deisel for me is a no no, I run a petrol V6 Elite and it smells of leather, is very quiet and I don't have the stink of deisel to put up with. Don't anyone dare say that they cannot tell a deisel from a petrol just by smell either, and without it running!
Petrol is more expensive to run, yes, but only until the fuel duty is whacked again. Petrol has already been caned so its a safe bet that deisel and lpg are in the firing line.
Whichever way you choose it is a personal choice and an ex fitter of nigh on 40 years around the 'stinkers' also influenced me.
Incidentally, why do so many deisel drivers fill up, and sometimes spill the fuel on the forecourt for others to walk in then traipse it into their own vehicles along with the all pervading smell?
In my experience the parts and maintenance for deisel engines are a little above those for a petrol too.
Mileage? Mine has well over 160k on it and only recently had the head gaskets done. It all depends on how well they are maintained and the quality of any parts fitted, including the oil and filters.

One more thing if you are going to tow or load the car heavily often choose the diesel.
Will do it better and the consumption shouldn't suffer as in petrol cause of higher torque of diesel.
I did have a powerful diesel before ( audi 2.5 tdi) and it was really hard to notice it was a diesel except for cold morning start.

A lot depends on annual milage as well as what sort of trips the car does,a v6 on a motorway run is pretty good on fuel(well, mine is)

I drive both petrol and diesel Omegas and can honestly say when inside the cabin you can't smell whether it's one or the other.
If you stick your nose in the engine bay or up the exhaust :o then yes you will tell :y
As for fuel duty, well diesel has been caned the same as petrol for quite a while now.
I notice on another thread that LPG prices especially down south are beginning to rise, I wonder why ::).
Yes if it gets more popular then they'll bloody rake the price up somehow :-X.
