Cheap Rocker Cover Gaskets
« on: 20 April 2010, 23:52:32 »

Went to my local parts supplier CES Ltd and purchased a pair of Rocker Cover Gaskets for my Omega MV6, they have lasted 3000 miles!! WHY??

Is it because they are cheap immitations? They felt a tad bit slimmer than GM ones!!

GM are charging £67 for a pair,is there anywhere cheaper or do i just add a bonding agent to the cheaper alternative?

Many Thanks

Allan

Never, EVER buy aftermarket gaskets ! They harden and break up in no time.

Despite the cost, you must buy VX. They last for ages as long as the breathers are cleaned ever so often.

As you've found out, aftermarkets are crap and will not last !

Dude !  With 105 posts you should have realised that by now. It crops up on the forum fairly often.

cut your losses and buy genuine i'm afraid.

this is the area most prone to leaking, and virtually no aftermarket gaskets are up to the job.  :'(

Buy Genuine.

I got through three aftermarket ones, expertly fitted, in three months-all leaked.

The linked costs of DIS rubbers and other damage far outweighed the small saving on the gasket price.

Add to this the nuisance, hassle, labour and oil everywhere including the underside of the car and on the drive, you'd be crackers to buy the cheap ones.

Cheers  :y

As said, get genuine only or you could keep stripping the car every 3000 miles and adding more gunk but I know which I prefer to do.

as above  :y

but the critical bit

get the sealant in the right place ( see guide on here somewhere )
and Don't over tighten the covers  ;)  ( again there is a guide )

then clean your brethers before it pops again  :y

.......yes and make sure you purchase the Vx BLACK sealant part no. 090485251 ;) ;)

Suddenly dealers are giving out the wrong sealant, so give them that number to ensure you get the right one 8-) 8-)

£67 (inc VAT ??) is not a bad price... last lot I bought were listed as £30.25 each + VAT thats £35.54 each = £71.08 for 2 :)

With Trade Card I actualy paid £55.06 + VAT = £64.70

That was 17/12/09 .. and I've just got round to actually fitting them this week !!
