TD Smokey on Startup
« on: 01 May 2010, 22:32:35 »

Is it normal for the 2.5 TD to be a bit smokey (dark smoke) on startup, clearing when engine up to temp?

Assuming glowplugs are new, what else to look for aside of filters and such... common problem?

I just the lightest waft of dark smoke after the glow plugs have been on, clears pretty much right away though.

Pretty much as Wellung says ......
First few revs, literally, and then pretty well clear James.

Is it starting pretty well 'on the button'?

Starts without fault, but is smokey for around 5 mins.

Then clears, and continues to run great.

Is it common, or, do I walk?  ::)

Asking the obvious James:
Oily or fuelly smoke?
Is it getting up to operating temp - knackered 'stat etc?

Check VERY carefuly the hose on the intercooler or intake side as this can cause exesessive smoke on start up. In fact check all the pipes and hoses while your at it. if your sure that all are ok then a bottle of diesel magic may cure it .

130k nothing, if its black smoke until its warm but no other seen faults i would assume the car has done a lot of very short journeys and is coked up!, test drive will tell, limited info? have you not seen the car yet then?
could do with a little more infor to be honest

just reread it and black smoke suggests unburnt fuel, which could be any number of things what year is the car? npersonally if its cheap enough then i would buy it cos they are very easy to sought out!!

If it turns over a couple of times before firing, that can make them smoke. Or if a couple of glowplugs are down.  Poor fuel doesn't help.

My initial thoughts, but after re-reading James' post, the smoke persists for around 5 mins.

Personally, I'm thinking some TLC here - a damn good service, a good drink of Diesel Magic, and an 'Italian Tune-up'
