loosing 1 ltr of coolant daily
« on: 04 May 2010, 22:40:19 »

Hi there I'm new here but I have browsed through the site frequently and thanks to that I've solved a few problems with my 02 petrol 2.2cd manual, however a few weeks ago I made a bit of a boob and topped-up the oil with diesel oil. Phoned RAC they said it would be ok as long as oil was changed within a month which I did.Since then I appear to have a coolant loss problem, the heater & cooling seem to be ok and there are no visable water leaks. The only marks are at the bottom pulley wheel at the front of the engine which looks more like oil than water. No oil in expansion tank, dont think there is water on the dip stick, only very light gunge on oil filler cap.Would be very grateful for any help or advice

Refill your system & do a pressure test.

I dont think its a pressure problem as there always seems to be pressure when the expansion cap is removed even when cold

If the system is pressurised even when cold then there is a blockage somewhere.

Expansion tank retaining pressure overnight was one of the symptoms of HG trouble on ours. Others were leaks from all sorts of places, and hard hoses when up to temperature (over-pressurising), rough running for the first few seconds after cold start, and finally, seeing coolant sitting on No.4 piston crown (through spark-plug hole with torch).

If I were you I'd be taking out the plugs and having a look, if you really can't account for this litre/day externally.  :(

just had the plus out and no water that I can see on the pistons
also had the RAC out guy did a pressure test all ok
he could not see any leaks either he did suggest however that since the timming belt is almost due for renewal that we get it done now and whlie its at the garage get them to have a look for leaks
