What have i unplugged ??!!??
« on: 04 May 2010, 14:47:14 »

I've got a thread going on 'Exhaust Manifold Gasket' as my engine is misfiring/stuttering.
Been suggested on here to unplug the MAF sensor & hopefully the misfiring might disappear!
Seen somewhere on this site that it's situated on the big pipe coming out of the air box & sits 2nd down.
So i unpluged it but couldn't start the engine until i plugged it back in - have i found the MAF sensor or something else??  :o :o :o

I just did the same thing and couldn't start the engine after, I'm almost certain my MAF is at fault & causing my misfire.

What is supposed to happen then when the sensor is unplugged? Are you meant to be able to start the car, or is that the quick and dirty way to cure a misfire, to turn the engine off?  ;D :D ;D

If its not there it will run in a dafault mode and bring the ECU light on.

Yep my bad, car still runs with ECU light on..it just cut the car out whilst running it.

The idling on mine seems to settle a bit when MAF unplugged, but the misfire is still there when you rev. Sorry to thread-jack here, eliteomegaman, I believe we have the same problem! Will start a new thread now.

Hi, I know you changed the leads and plugs but could be worth rechecking, you seem to be having exactly the same problem as i did recently, check if one of the plugs is a different colour to the others ?

Aha  :y Yesterday my mechanic friend checked the dis pack for any loose leads but fine. Did a compression test & everything fine. Changed the HT Leads & lastly checked the 'new' spark plugs (one week old) & found that one of the plugs was a different colour so changed it!! But the misfire/stuttering is still there  :'( :'(
When i took the car to Captain Zok at easter he said the cats were knackered but first port of call would be to change the plugs (no.6 was split) & HT Leads.
Could the problem relate to the cats  :-?

If it was the cats i suspect it would affect more than just one pot  :y

Was the different coloured plug from No6 pot ? do you think you have narrowed it down to that pot ?
Maybe a clogged injector ? :-/

When Captain Zok's son had a look No. 6 plug was cracked & swimming in oil  :o
One of the new plugs was a different colour (not sure which plug) & the car has only travelled a mile or so - if its the rocker cover then could this be the cause of the misfire/stuttering  :-?
So far i've had 3 people with 3 different theories -
1. Exhaust manifold gasket
2. Knackered cats
3. Leaking rocker covers
I'll take a poke in the dark & based on the different coloured plug i'd say no. 3  :-/ :-?
Anyone want to participate in this exciting guessing game  :D
