Hi,

I need some advice re V6 cambelt change as am stuck ......

I've got it all stripped down and am having problems at the stage before getting the old belt off.

I've got the crank locking tool on ok and am able to slip the red 1/2 lock in place with no problem at all as the alignment gauge fitted perfectly onto 1/2.

The problem I have is with 3/4. I can't get the alignment gauge to fit so have tried fiddling with the adjusters to no avail. I haven't touched the tensioner at all. I've been fiddling with the adjusters with 1/2 unlocked and can adjust 1/2 happily - but it seems to have little impact on 3/4.

I've been looking at the DVD - but this shows adjustment of 1/2 as 3/4 was ok - which is the opposite situation to what I have.

Tried both the adjusters, but haven't touched the tensioner at all.

Might pop down the garage @ lunchtime for a fresh look/start.

Have been mulling it over and if can't get a "lightbulb" revelation from on here will try and adjust the old belt up in-situ as if it had just been fitted - if you can see my logic. ...........

This is where you need to have done a few when you come across little problems like this.

Thanks to Daz for his excellent advice and morale support  - belt is now off and activity paused for a while now. Luckily I can just walk away from this and come back to it when I have another hour or so to play with.

An interesting note is that the garage who fitted the kit last time only decided to use 2 of the 3 backplate bolts

So far I've chalked up a dead water pump, an aux belt and its  tensioner that was well past it and a missing bolt - I'm sure there is more to come with this little project ...........

right hand lower eccentric controls cams 3&4.get this right first then the eccentric between cams 1/2 and 3/4 adjusts cams 1&2. iirc

You should have the new belt on, timed up and have had a run around the block in it by now!!

I took it off during my lunchbreak.

All safely locked up nice and safe in the garage and wont be able to do any more on the belt until the weekend.

One its done I've got to do the cam covers & breathers ..........

I'm not in any hurry, just really pleased that it aint my day to day wheels ..........

I took a weekend to change mine 4 yrs ago, I just couldn't summonse the enthusiasm 
I cleared out my breathers last week when I did my cam belt, but removing the belt cover just highlighted to me that my cam covers were leaking more than I thought  So cam covers is next ...... soon.

Sorry to get in on the act here, BUT - I am in the process of repairing my 2.5V6 (slipped belt) and tried a belt in the first instance seemed to get it fitted ok using the timing marks around the casings as I dont have the fitting kit yet.  I have read threads about the use of the eccentrics to get the belt exactly right, obviously there was no compression so new heads job!  I am about to put it all together this weekend as all the bits have arrived.  I intend to time it all up using the timing marks again - do you have any tips for me?

Yep, the timing marks on the back cover are just a very rough guide. Use a proper timing kit
