Code 0420 emissions - fuel related?
« on: 14 May 2010, 09:01:58 »

After several weeks of behaving itself the emissions light came on yesterday. Interestingly I had been running on very low amount of fuel in tank (Omega is now only doing 10 miles a day).

Refuelled and cleared code and everything ok again.

There have of course been many posts on this subject on the forum but this link with fuel seems to have a definite pattern with my Omega.

I am not too interested in moving the sensors as has been recommended by others.

I dont know if its fuel related or not but here is my experiance .... i had months of joy with this problem and tried all fuels such as BP ultimate and Shell V max and none of them made any difference ... Vx told me i needed new O2 sensors which i knew was rubbish because the live data showed them working as they should .. i cleared the code but just kept coming back within 100 miles or so ...i wasnt able to move the sensors myself so the only thing that did it for me was a new cat  .. its a year or so now and never had the fault since :y

I've just moved the lambda's on the ex police 3.2 i've got and its cured the problem. Well worth a couple of hours and £16 ;)

Applying a bit of logic and timelines, as I understand it...

Car leaves factory, Cats fully functional and working optimally
Any fuel quality, makes little difference, new cats can cope.

few years later, cat efficiency started to drop
They can happily remove the required toxins from clean good quality fuel, lesser fuels less so, and may trigger the occasional alert

another year on, the efficienct has dropped some more, now any fuel can trigger the alerts, and as time moves on, more and more so,

Replacing the precat takes you back to the start, moving the sensor eliminates the need.

My views are similar to Jimbobs.  Who knows if better quality fuels actually slow down the process, compared to cheaper, artificially octane boosted fuels....
