TD Smoking alot under hard acceleration
« on: 15 May 2010, 09:00:08 »

Hi guys,

I was driving up the M1 last night in the dark and i noticed that when i floored the pedal and the car kicked down there would be a large amount of smoke come out of the car as i could see it in the headlights of the cars and trucks. I floored the car maybe 30 times throughout the whole journey to see if the smoke cleared but it didnt seem to, it seemed to be the same amount at the start as at the end. When i used sports mode and the kickdown was stronger there may have been more smoke perhaps but certainly not less. My question is, is this normal or is this excessive smoking, surely this is excessive. The reason i havent noticed before is i normally drive really slowly on the motorway but last night i was bored and wanted to see how quickly the car would accelerate from  60-80 etc. Is there anything i can do to try and reduce this smoking problem. When i start the car there is almost no smoke and the engine runs fine. I have changed the air filter, oil and oil filter about 1000 miles ago. Thanks guys

Alex

Try 20  miles at a steady 80mph. It's just needing a clearout.

Take the ram air pipe (bit that says Turbo Diesel on it) off and see if it's full of oil. If it is it'll be drawing oil in through the intake and burning it.

Sainsburys is the worst I've found for this problem :-?

When you changed the filters did you fill the fuel filter with "Diesel Magic" works a treat to clean the injectors.

Must say you do notice the smoke more at night (in the following cars headlights) but in the daytime is it particularly bad/noticeable when booting it.

As said do all above and try a different fuel, see how it goes. :y

Thanks for the fast replies guys

To answer a few questions
When i changed the oil recently i cleaned out the charge air pipe and it only had the lightest film of oil on it so  would doubt that was the problem but yes certainly could be.
I havent changed the fuel filter for around 5000 miles so perhaps that could do with a change.
I cant see any smoke during the day so i dont think its that bad but it just looked quite alot last night, as in i would have a truck behind me with their powerful lights and when i floored it up to 80-90mph to get away from them  i would see what looked like a pretty big loud come out and it didnt decrease throughout the journey which i thought was odd, as i was trying to blow the crap out of the system as i drive the car really, really carefully normally.

I always use sainsburys fuel
So this diesel magic, when  change the fuel filter i fill the new filter with it and then let it burn, should i have very low fuel in the car at the time so the concentration of the stuff is high and also what about small amounts of acetone, ive heard this cleans out the system and injectors etc

thanks again

As said in my earlier post, this may be your problem.

Try at least new fuel filter, filled with diesel magic, that's after you've used up all of that Sainsburys fuel.
See if it cleans things up.
If you haven't taken the fuel filter off before I find it easier to take the whole thing off with mounting bracket. It's easier this way to get the top collar to seat properly.
Once you've got it back together filled with the magic stuff (from Halfords £5.99) start car and give it some revs. :y

I filled up on two occasions with Sainsburys city diesel, never again, it smoked like hell.

I always find Asda diesel ok for me, or Tesco if you must use a supermarket fuel. :y

Ok thanks for the tip,
so should i do some italian tune ups on the car next time i go somewhere, its an auto so i cant put it in 5th and then speed up, so i could do some 50-80mph blasts, using sports mode and then not sports mode just to see the difference, also i cant see any smoke during the day but its hard to see anyway if the suns out,
