Opening stuck back doors
« on: 14 May 2010, 16:58:27 »

Hi this Elite I've inherited has both back doors stuck shut. I think I know how to fix it, but how do I get the bloody things to open first? Do I take the inside handle out and re-attach the mechanism? I think the solenoids are OK.

When you say the doors are "stuck shut", do you mean the locks are not opening with the buttons going up, or are the doors physically stuck to the door frames?? :-/ :-/

The door pins move with the central locking but the handles don't open the door, in our out. Its the mechanism stuck, not the door itself I think.

Might be that the child locks are on. Get someone inside pushing on the door while you operate the outside handle.

Don't use washing up liquid anywhere near a car, it's loaded with salt. This is why all the 60's and 70's minis disolved... everyone fitting their windscreens with WUL ;D

Just a gentle shoulder from inside should see them open.

OK update - its actually the complete opposite of child locks! Doors open from inside now, but not the outside. Before I go take the back doors apart and check the handles, is there anything else that may free it up? Inside handles work like new, outside ones dont wanna know.

Probably new feature, parent lock? :) So you cannot get inside to punish them for crying, fighting... :)
I had this problem too, but on only one door. I could open it from inside, but from outside the handle didnīt work. The cause was it got broken inside, so it was not manipulating the mechanism. As the door was very rusted, I have replaced them completely...

Thats what child locks are, they stop children from opening the doors inside the car.

Open the dooe, there should be a lever on the outer edge of the door near the latch/catch.  Move it the oposite way from where it is now and it should be sorted.  :y

if they aint opening from outside then itll be the rod from the handle to the door mech, the rod has got a plastic bit that is adustable as its on a thread so might be worth tweaking them a little, to make it easy unbolt the outer handle first. :y

Fair enough!

Mr S its the outside now matey, I know child locks. But a bonus is that now I can open the doors, I know how to take the door card out etc. So here goes!!

Cheers for the info, hopefully they've not been bent, I for one haven't forced the issue so here's hoping the last man hasn't either  :y

Thanks guys as per usual!
