CONFUSED, DOT COM.
« on: 19 May 2010, 11:10:12 »

Just bought a pair of front wishbones, got to fit them today, and the hole in one of the bushes is 16mm, and the other hole in the bush is 13mm!!  seeing as both the bolts are the same size, am going to drill out the hole in the bush to 16mm.

Any problem with doing that??

can't see why they fitted the wrong size bush, as they are VX parts.................
the other side has both bushes the same at 16mm.

drilling would only be safe if there is enough parent material.

measure the outside diameter of the bush inner sleeve, where its bonded to the rubber. If it's the same as the other side, you could attempt it. If it's not the same, then a return is your only option.

just think on - if you'd had an accident and ended up in court - the judge asks you how come this wishbone failed, causing you to leave the road, squashing that bus-queue of nuns - the only possible answer you would have is that you'd drilled it out. That's not going to look good !

especially now that you've announced your intention on the web....,!

Agh PC problems.... try again:

Does sound like you've had an incorrect one!!

If you drill it out, will there be enough supporting metal, surrounding the hole in the centre of the bush?

No problem fellers......the outside diameter of the metal in the bush is identical to the other one, only the inside hole size is different. Did check that first. Drilling out the inside hole only makes the metal inside sleeve of the bushes identical.

Thanks for the thoughts though.

What are you using to drill the bushes out with? Just about all the 16mm drill bits I've ever used are morse taper. If you had a straight shanked 16mm drill bit, it would be a fair old Jacob chuck to hold it & would you be able to hold the actuall drill, especially if it snatched/grabbed. I can just see a Sixstring spining around a wishbone holding tightly to a large hand drill  ;D ;D

The answer could I suppose be that you're taking it to work's radial arm drill  :y

We had a large 2 man 'hand drill' at sea. It was very easy to end up with 2 of you spinning around in circles  ;D  ;D  ;D

If it was me, I'd photograph the 'bad' bush/wishbone next to the good bush/wishbone.  Phone up the dealer and ask for an email addy, send 'em the pic and have the buggers courier a correct one out to you!  Failing that you should be able to negotiate a retrospective discount.

Phoned them up, and their reply?????

"oh, sorry. bring it back and we'll replace it."
on being told my predicament with it up on the ramp and undriveable:
"tomorrow is ok."
on being told the bush is incorrect, so i want someone to bring me out one:
"sorry, we don't do that, you bought it in Bristol, we only deliver in Bristol"   (I'm 20 miles away in Lydney)

on asking for a discount:
"if you have to buy another one from an alternative source, we will only issue you with a credit note to buy something else from us"
on asking AGAIN for a DISCOUNT:
"sorry, we are not allowed to do that"
on asking for another bush to press out and replace it myself:
"no, you have to return it to us unmarked and unopened and we will give you another one"
But I couldn't find out it was wrong until I opened the box......??

You could'nt make it up.
