I have a 2002 2.6 V6 which became a bad starter. You had to turn the key for a few turns before it came to life. All of a sudden without doing anything, it started to once again fire up with the first turn of the key. From that point I experienced a strong petrol smell. My mechanic found the problem was the thin tube that runs from the back of the engine under the plenum to the front of the engine (not sure of the name of the bits it connects to). The little rubber elbows on this plastic pipe had come apart and the petrol was coming from there. He replaced them and the petrol smell stopped which is great. Now the engine won't start properly again. There must be a link but can anyone advise. I think he said that the thin pipe was a vacuum pipe?

The little pipe is the reference port on the fuel pressure regulator.

It should not be leaking fuel. This suggests to me that the fuel pressure regulator has failed and this is probably what's causing the bad starting.

I would fit a new fuel pressure regulator, reconnect the little pipe and see if that's resolved it.
