Engine temp up and down
« on: 08 April 2010, 17:03:14 »

Noticed as I got into crawling traffic after blasting at m/way speeds that the engine temp was creeping up to 95 deg C.
It did go down again after a while, but then crept back up. By then I'd reached my destination.
On the way back it went up again but came down and behaved itself for the 23 miles journey.
The other day around town it was up and down.
The coolant level is like a cm below the line on the tank. On the X20XEV it's just a line, no min or max?
It's due for a coolant change soon but is this symptomatic of something else?
I'm scared!

Quite normal behavior if you don't have the aircon running/fitted.

Without aircon there are no fans running at all, and in traffic there will be no cooling effect whatsoever .. so the system will heat up until the fans "kick in" at around 92 (I think) ... the temperature will then drop .. the fans turn off .. and the cycle starts again.

When on the road you have "ram air" cooling so this does not happen

With aircon the fans run all the time so giving cooling air ...

Excellent, I had thought as much.  I was poised to post a new thread to ask pretty much the same question.

With a/c on it sits rock steady at 85deg, but last week when I didn't run with the a/c it went to about 95deg and then dropped, as I assume the fans kicked in.

One less thing to worry about  :).

I do remember a couple of years back needing to get somewhere quick but being low on fuel I turned the climate off and the engine temp went all over the place.
However I leave it on all the time and I have this problem in stop-start traffic.
I did a 200 mile trip the other day, again, fine on the m/way but going up and down after a while in the slow stuff.

Today I had a weird moment starting out from cold where the throttle response was kinda 'lumpy' and then the engine warning light came on for a few seconds.  :o After it went out the throttle response was back to normal. Still have the temp issue. Any ideas?

Since we've had non-cold weather I can confirm that the climate control is not working!
Hopefully it's just a re-gas...
This would explain the temperature thing.

However, the lumpy acceleration, like TC kicking in except I don't have it on my car, coupled with the appearance of the engine warning light has happened again once after a cold start. The light goes out later on and everything seems fine.
Any ideas what this is systematic of?
