it won't be easy changing them for something else if the threads in the holes are full of paint.

got loads rubber thread protectors in work...put them in the hole,no paint on thread ...

Yes I can 100% comfirm that they can, I got mine refurb about a year ago, and I got the guy to plug the holes so that the torx bolts would fit back in without the threads being covered.

There's an Astra local who had his 'Stars' powder coated in charcoal grey and the bolts chromed. Looks quite tasty actually.

Obviously if the threads are plugged  :-? but not if they're not.
