Steering wheel removal
« on: 07 June 2010, 21:41:37 »

What is the best way to remove a steering wheel ? I must be missing something as mine won't pull off and before you ask yes I have removed the 22mm nut off the spindle before you tell me otherwise. ::)

You're best to leave the nut on by a few threads till you've released it off its taper to preserve your smile  ;D  ;D. They say a sharp clout from behind will shift it, but I have a puller I made years ago

Sounds like I could do with that puller! and thanks for the advice about keeping my smile (even with my child scaring face it might come in useful one day) ;) :y

Easiest way for me was as Andy says, but I gave it a few clouts at the 9 o/c and 3 o/c positions. Once off then you can fit your flylead Simon :y

grab it at "9" and "3" and rock it/give it some.

(on the old astras there was two oval shaped cut outs in the boss for a puller)

just leave the nut on a few threads then get a punch on the top of the shaft & hit down on it, i know it sounds dodgey but this is how vx told me to do it years ago in my monza days & has never damaged anything. :y

Done the same.

Sit on the drivers seat and put a fair wee bit of pull on the steering wheel at the 3/9 position whilst someone else clouts the centre nut with a chunky hammer.  Keeping the nut on by a few turns saves you getting a mouthfull of steering wheel and a dentist visit!   ;D

the potential flaw in hitting the end of the column is that it can damage the collapsible bit.

As long as neither of you is Geoff Capes and using a long handled Monday hammer, should be fine....

But, good to point out.   :y

Get the proper VX puller 2 legs locate in the egg shaped holes in the boss, then screw centre bolt on to column end it's off in a jiff. made one years ago,but finally bought one. I do like proper tools.Seem to remember it cost less than £20.00.
