Erratic Idling
« on: 31 May 2010, 12:10:58 »

My tick over when hot, 'hunts' up and down between 1,000 rpm and 1,900 rpm when in Neutral or Park, not as noticeable in gear, when cold it ticks over perfectly in any gear.... any advice? ... some one did suggest the 'Idle Control Valve'
The car does run 'hot' though - from 97-100 degrees (and sometimes in heavy traffic just over a 100 degrees) so rad/engine may need flushing, have a new cooling fan switch to fit? so may run cooler afterwards, could it be connected?  :o

I would echo the advice to check the I.C.V. I had a similar problem with idle on a Vectra with 2 litre engine. Wish I'd had access to this forum then as I put up with the erratic tickover for far too long before I set to fixing it.
There are two guides in the maint' section which are both excellent, both for how to do the job and one in particular will give you an understanding of how it all works which I found helpful. Check out the link to one of the guides

Yep ICV - also a good idea to clean the throttle body and breathers.

You need to get that temperature under control quickly if the weather is going to start getting hotter as 97/100 is too high even with idle issues,
Get that coolant system flushed and top up with a equal 50/50 coolant mixture and make sure all air is removed.
Erractic idle is almost certainly ICV and as said good clean and lube of slider should resolve that..also check for unmetered air entering plenum and causing incorrect mixture of air/fuel.
Best of luck and report back on findings.

also just give it some tlc and clean out the air intacks, also clean out the air intake on ICV that gose from thetop of the engine to the right side of the ICV, will need to take off the ICV and unbolt it as that gets blocked, can minimise it by putting a fuel filter on the line small one, stops it blocking up, need a long pin or bit of weld wire to clean the hole out, allso the pipe needs a good flush out as gets blocked from the bend area. good luck.

Thanks for the advice chaps! looks very much like the ICV. Great guide in maintenance! will try cleaning all the pipes and connectors first, if that doesn't work a strip down and clean!
Many Thanks
