TYRE WEAR - SQUEELING
« on: 13 June 2010, 17:00:22 »

I had the tracking done on my MV6 as front
tyres worn on inside so change front pair and had
tracking done at same time.

wheels are facelift 245/45/17

Every since the front tyres squeel - I had kwik fit check
tracking again and said maybe a degree out on front
but nothing to worry abount

Checked the tyres after going into town and all I can
say is the both tyres ok on outside and seem to be
wearing on inside - I say about 15/20 degrees from outside edge to inside - hense the squeeling

Is this just tracking or could it be something else?

thanks

They are about £60 a side from all german parts. My MV6 had the exact problem with it wearing inside edge of tyre. As you brake wheels want to push back which makes tyre run on inside edge,

Just to add, dont buy cheap ones as they dont last.

I would not be condeming the wishbones until you have checked them but, tracking will not have caused the tyre wear, camber will have.....and as you have not had this corrected then they will wear again

The wishbones you have seen come with drop links. Now i dont know what the quality is like but if you do buy new wishbones get the drop links also as they are cheap enough. The reason i say this is when i done mine the drop links were a pig to get of as threads were bad. That is if it does turn out to be the wishbones? :y

I have very little mechanical knowledge but it is funny
that this happened only after I had tracking done.
could it be possible that they did not tighten everything up
after tracking done - as fault only occured after tracking was done.

The only thing i can suggest is to get a second opinion on the tracking. Or take it back and get it checked again by the garage who done it.

As Mark has said could be the camber that's out, but could also be the wishbones.  Any MOT station should be able to check the wishbones for you.

The equipment that Kwik-Fit and the like use for tracking will not give an accurate setting.  Even the gear that VX dealers use is useless - I could tell you a long story but it makes me too angry!

Go somewhere that does full 4 wheel alignment using Hunter gear, for example.  Don't be fooled by claims of "4 wheel laser alignment"... go to a specialist, it'll cost you a lot less than another pair of tyres!

My local place charges £35 + VAT to check front camber, rear camber, front tracking, rear tracking, thrust-line and probably more that I can't remember.  You get a printout before and after adjustment and they charge £25 per hour for making the necessary adjustments.

Obviously, replace any faulty parts BEFORE getting the alignment done.

But he took for tracking because the tyres were scrubbed.  Camber being out causes scrubbing.
