Cambelt failure - no interference?
« on: 21 June 2010, 02:15:50 »

Hi all,

Just a quick question.. The old X25XE I have that packed in last year gave me a surprise tonight. I finally dismantled it and to my amazement, I haven't found one single damage on the heads/valves :o How could that be?

The belt was very worn after half a years service, long strings of belt was torn up and must have folded under something. Timing ended up completely random, nothing (!) was correct, but still it would "run" on two cylinders. I will try some way of testing valve leakage, but it looks nice. No marks on valves or pistons  :-?

Anyone had similar experience?

I have seen a few cars which have been lucky when 2 teeth out on the timing... any more than that and it is curtains I'm afraid.
If your valves aren't bent was the timing that far out?

Do a leak down test on the valves, you may find they have been nicked which would be enough to stop them seating properly.

The timing was about one tooth wrong on 2-4-6 exhaust, but all others anything from 5 to 20. This happened at very low rpm so that might explain something.

Yes, I have to do a leakdown test, but what is the easiest method? Filling gasoline over the valves?

Anyway, if I have some bent valves, it's not the worst that could happen (as long as the guides are intact).

5-20 teeth out I would put money on valves being bent mate :(
I could be wrong but I think brake fluid is used to check for leaks :y

Paraffin probably best as it's thinner and will find the leaks more readily. Toss up between it being thin and being volatile enough to evaporate and give a false positive though. Petrol is probably out for this reason.

Thanks guys. I will try both liquids suggested and see what the results are. Hopefully I'm really really lucky  8-)

Fixing up the X25XE could be smart - spare engine.. With my luck, the Y26SE will last a year or so..

Aye, will check everything on it before I put it back together. I have no rush fixing it. Have to clean the PCV system too, it's completely grown in.

Maybe I should take it one step further? Thicker/double head gaskets, MegaSquirt, turbo manifolds and two small fans? Hmm :)

Ouch! You make a point... Hmm, let me see; parachute, anchor, snowplow (!)?

Once the miggy is up to speed there's no stopping it (other than a crank sensor failure or cambelt snapping) :p
