Fan switches
« on: 22 June 2010, 22:02:33 »

The secondary fans (2 at the front) on my Miggy aren't working at the mo, and this evening I've been checking the wiring to the fan switches.

When I unplugged the top switch, the connecter spins around in the housing which dosn't seem right to me....   :(

There are two switches on the nearside of the rad, one at the top and one at the bottom, can anyone tell me which switch controls which fan please?

Many thanks in advance  :y

OK, Thanks Razzo.

I'm thinking that the top one is knackered given that the connector turns in the housing, and maybe the bottom one is no good either...... :(

The thing is though, they are both only about 3 months old as I put new switches in when I put a new rad in.  I got them from Vaux-world so maybe they aren't genuine GM?  ::)

Is it possible that fan switches would fail so quickly?

I have a couple of radiator switches here if they're any good to you?

You need also to check out the Cooling Fan Relays are working Ok as this could also be the source of the problem and not just the Thermo switches. There is a Fuse/relay guide in the Maintenance section.

To be honest I'm not very good with electrics, but I tried all the green relays that relate to the fans, in the horn slot under the steering wheel and they all seemed OK....

I replaced the rad 3 months ago and put new fan switches in, but they were cheap ones and thats why I'm wondering if they have failed?  :-/  Probably should have slashed out on geniune GM  :-[ ::)

Several fuses/relays that apply to the cooling fans are located in the engine bay relay box .. triangular thing above the battery

Just check which engine you have against each picture

When mine packed in it was simply the fuse in there ... 20 amp IIRC .. :)

Thanks Entwood,

All the fuses are good, and as I said I tested all the relays in the box above the battery, in the horn slot under the steering wheel.  The horn worked on every one and I could feel them clicking.  So I assumed that they are all good?  :-/

The fans switches I got from Vaux-world, and they were about £10 and £16 as opposed to £26 and £38 from the Stealers. Thats why I'm now wondering if they have failed because they are cheap pattern parts?  Even so I'd have thought that they would last longer than 3 months!!! >:(

I'd think it's quite unlikely that your fan switch has failed, even with the rotation you describe*.  You can test it easily enough though.

Here's a VW one I dissected recently, and the electrical (left side of pic) stuff has no wiring that would twist and break if it is rotated relative to the brass casing. It would just indicate that the brass 'crimp' hasn't been done quite tight enough down onto the plastic.

If the Omega one is internally the same-ish, and has the same dual contact arrangement you can test it with a multimeter.  You may well find that the external contacts are labelled something like + (or 0 ?), 1, and 2.  At around 95C the + one should become connected to 1, and at about 102C contact 2 should also connect to +.

You may need to take it off the rad and warm the brass bit with a hot air gun to get to 102, as boiling water won't quite do it for you, but the 1st switch should click at less than 100C.  :)

*Edit: unless it's really loose, as that would affect how far the moving plastic peg has to go to push the contact mechanisms  :-/

I had a fiddle with the top switch earlier and twisted it round abit and the main fan burst into life which suggests to me there's a loose connection in there somewhere.... :-/

Tried to jiggle the bottom switch but was too tight and hot to get in there!!  ::)

Thanks Welung, I'll bear it in mind.  Think I'll fiddle abit more, but I might fork out for new genuine ones, then I can rule out the switches if the problem persists  :-/
