These really are a complete waste of time and space. I can't understand why Vx went to so much trouble to fit headlight washers in the first place (without headlight wipers - a double whammy!). I removed mine and all the associated plumbing then had the bodywork professionally filled and re-painted. The front end looks much sleeker now.

Cos they are a legal requirement for the HID lighting setup.
HID's do seem to be affected far more with dirty lenses that traditional bulbs.  The light levels do seem to drop off as the lenses get dirty, I know a good blast of water improves my lighting in the winter.

Errr they are a legal requirement 

By making it 'sleeker' you have made your car illegal to drive!

HIDs are affected by dirt a lot more, everytime i am driving the Elite at night and wash the windscreen, light output goes up.

Now to address the legal issue - can you tell me where there is proof they are a legal requirement! Sounds like tripe to me - so what your suggesting is that ordinary headlights aren't affected by dirt.

Also, talking of what is legal - any modifications to the manufacturers spec. that isn't divulged to your insurance company i.e. wheel style/size change, body trim mods., exhaust change, suspension lowered, engine size change/mods.?  :-?

Additionally, I have heard several people talk about upgrading lights to the HID type does that include fitting the headlight washer jets? I think the rain would be just as effective

Pre-facelift under headlight, facelifts had them mounted on the bumper

Tripe huh? Ask yourself why every manufacture goes to the hassle of fitting washers to cars with HID lights, do you think they would bother if it was not a legal requirement?

Washers are better than wipers.....also name one manufacture thats fitted headlight wipers after 1990's!


Given right mixture of screenwash, i find headlight washers on our Elite excellent, everytime it washes the lights at night, output increases by 30% easily. Yes other lights are affected by dirt, but HIDs are affected much more, hence the legal requirement for their fitment.

Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

Self Leveling is also there to prevent dazzle...

Tunnie is right, Xenon equipped vehicles need headlight washers, every single xenon equipped vehicle sold in the uk has headlight washers, without exception and this is mandatory.

Wipers were only fitted to V70's and S60's until 2004 '54' plate and the L322 Range Rover from 2002 until the facelift in 2005. They then just changed to headlight washers which are more effective then wipers. I can't think of any other newish vehicles with headlight wipers fitted.
Having driven both halogen and xenon equipped vehicles, the light output is greatly increased when the headlight washers are used on xenon equipped vehicles. This is the case on Omega's, but even more so on some other vehicles, including the L322 Range Rover.

xenon beams run warmer, therefore attract dirt when 'raining', mandatory requirement in Europe, including us in the UK !
