First thing I would do is check the timing is still ok, then check the plug wells for oil/water, & the dis pack rubbers for perishing/cracks. :y

sorry to be a pain but how do you check the timing can it be done by a complete novice with little more than a few spanners and sockets
i know that at least one of the dis pack rubbers is fubard
will check plug wells early next week at the latest
i'm thinking its not to serious as the car is really running great
thanks for all your help

Put your location in your profile .. there might be someone near you with the right kit to read the codes and see why the light is on .. :)

Change this as it could well be the source of the misfire :y

how bad is the rubber damaged? this would not help matters...

Drop a PM to Hotel21, he's a bit of a drive away in Fife, but has tech2, and get codes read and see whats going on.

To check timing if you want, look at the crank pully, at the bottom is a lug or gap/recess type thing, this should line up with gap in the back cover when the engine is at top dead centre. (lugs in the cams line up with top cover)
