A Beuatiful Day!
« on: 08 July 2010, 22:52:45 »

So, popped out tonight to the local garage to pick up some beer for consumption this evening......

Very expensive Beer!

Coming back along the Ring Road, I heard a noise which I didn't like.  I was only gently accelerating, but instantly backed off the throttle.  The noise went away but Battery light came on, steering went heavy.... Aux belt has stripped again (second time in 2 months).

I've only got 1/2 a mile until home, so ease the throttle back on and chance it home.  With that, at around 2.5k revs, the engine dies.  I pull to the side of the dual carriageway and hit the hazard switch.  On attempting to restart the engine, the motor turns over, but no compression.  A slight knocking noise (very faint) on turn-over (only heard from standing at the engine bay).

AA towed me home (I demanded they did, even though they said they couldn't because it was an Auto (It's 1/2 a mile)).

So, could the Aux Belt have worked it's way into the Cam Belt housing and FUBAR'd that, or is it a coincidence?

Whats the likely damage and repair bill?  Engine failed at 2.5k revs and turns over with only that slight knock.

Thanks for reading, and feel free to take the piss  ;D

if it turns over with no compression it does sound as though the aux belt has interfered with the valve timing

When the aux belt failed last time, what was the cause?

My auxiliary belt let go recently, it also runs the water-pump so I didn't risk driving any further... how hot did your car get?

The Engine mounts were worn badly, causing the Air Con Pulley to clip the chassis leg, stripping the belt.

This was all fixed, and no interference this time, although the belt is literally shredded.

The engine only ran for about 6 or 7 seconds after the noise of the Aux Belt giving up, so engine didn't get anywhere near the red.   :y

Very strange one. Are all your aux belt pulleys running true? If any are buckled that could probably destroy a belt pretty quickly. Have no idea how that could effect the cambelt though! Only thing you can do is strip down and investigate. It's not too much to do to inspect the cambelt. I feel for you as I had a similar failure just last week :(.

Suspect the loose end 'whips' and catches the belt cover enough to distort and damge belt...

Crikey. Seems intuitively unlikely/impossible (at least to me), but I guess it's one of those things that if you were to see it in super slow motion you'd appreciate the energy invloved! Sort of like those super slo mo videos of tennis raquets and golf clubs hitting balls, or bullets hitting steel plates. Sorry if this doesn't make you feel any better, Broomies Mate!

Yep. Fuel pump'll continue to run on battery power.

Nothing to stop the engine from running without an aux. belt - until battery flattens or engine siezes due to overheating.  :'(
