Yes

Yup! Auto windscreens used cheese wire to cut through bottom section. There are also some guides and rubbers of course to seal it

stopped using rubber seal in late 80's erl 90's when pedestrians were beeing decapitated at scene of an accident as seal dose not take impact and just flies out.

I think the glass becoming an integral piece of the cars structure, and in affect another panel, also had a lot to do with it

when i had a fiesta mrk2, got hit by a bus, windscreen went 100yards down street and just missed a baby in a pram screen was cracked down mid, back window poped out, bus came at me from side, i ended up in pas seat with the dash, bus driver was not looking, i ended up in hos for 4weeks baby had cut to the face. glue'd in screen stay in and like you said lizzie alot better that way.

You're right Lizzie - the bonded screen is now an integral part of the car structure contributing to the "tub's" strength, as is the rear screen.  The older screens, fitted using a large rubber "grommit" contributed very little to the strength of the bodyshell.
