Tyre Advice Please
« on: 14 July 2010, 21:55:34 »

I am in need of some tyres by end of week.

I can't quite stretch to Pirrelli or Mich's

So what do people think of either:-

Falken FK-452 or Falken Ziex ZE-912

I can get these fitted for £74.50 per corner.

I've had FK452's on the front for 9000 miles .. no problems to report. just taken off some Avons from the back .. which I would never use again .. and put 452's on as well.  Ride is a little firmer but handling has been just as good.

I have to say that i find the handling quite poor on omegas with anything other than quality tyres on the rears. I understand where you are coming from though with the costs!

Yes price is a concern, especially when Pirr and Mich come in at approx £120 per corner

But I just dont have the budget for 4 tyres at that price, but if I get some Falkens then it is approx a £182 saving for 4

452's at £75 a corner is a good price .... despite much "shoppng around" in the swindon area baet I got was £97 each for two total including all the crappy extras .. which should IMHO .. be standard

Yes it comes as a shock when you need four. Given your location, have you thought about changing your alloys? You may be perfectly happy with the originals, but if you wanted something different, now is the time, you would probably find some with decent rubber on too.

So long as you don't buy Wan Li tyres, had two on the back of mine when I bought it, and they were dangerous, the sidewalls moved, making car unstable at any speed over 40, they had NO grip, wet or dry.  I removed them after 600 miles and flogged them on ebay.  My choice would be Michelins, Dunlops are OK.  I can't say what Falkens would be like on an Omega, but on a BMW 535 I used to own they didn't give me any problems.

452 aren't too bad, quiet, grip meats the price paid, so not great if you like to crack on. You may find an increase in bump steer, tram-lining and general unexplained wandering though.

912 poor grip level, as they are more durable, and appalling stability IMO. Avoid.

Tbh falkens not rearly suited the the omega, kumho ku31 may be a wiser choice in that price range, not tried them myself though.

Firestone Firehawk SZ80's.  I know I keep banging on about them, but for the money (£80 a corner for my Omega) they are exceptionally good.  Slightly noisier than the higher priced tyres but offer awesome grip wet or dry, and last a good 15k with plenty of fast road driving.

Not sure on your tyre size, so unsure if they'd be available.

Its your choice but I have seriously tried the rest and the original Michelin Pilot Supremacy are by far and away the best choice. A tad expensive they may be but they give exceptional mileage, quiet ride, a comfortable ride and the road grip can be relied on.  Given that their mileage is a long one and their other qualities which far exceed the rest makes them a good value for your money buy.
If you cannot afford them new try for part warn ones which you should get for around 30.00 each with a good 5 - 6mm tread on them, including fitting/balancing. But if you only get two put them on the back first.
Cheap tyres will give cheap results and performance otherwise the car manufacturers would fit, and mose importantly, recommend them. Up to you m8, I stick to what I know I can rely on.

Also bear in mind they need to be of the correct rating. I bought cheap tyres for the last omega and they lasted less than 10k  miles but when I went to get them changed the tyre fitter pointed out that I had the wrong rated tyres on.
Worth checking as it was pointed out that apart from being dangerous it was also illegal so if I'd been pulled I'd have been in deep do do.

Got 912's on the front, grip very well, approaching 30k since fitted, no issues! 452's on the rear much the same. I'd get them again  :y

I have 452's all round - nothing wrong with them, but coming from PZeros and Sport Contacts, it ain't the same.
Good enough to get me from A to B but not by choice.

I have a good tyre place near where I work.
He goes to Germany to get the tyres that have to be replaced after punctures....
(in Germany, if you have 1 puncture all 4 tyres have to be changed - he brings back the intact other 3. My difficulty is that he never seems to get my size.....
He usually charges £60 for a 19" tyre)
see if anyone near you does 'em! ::)
