Faulty EGR valve?
« on: 24 July 2010, 21:08:08 »

I have a lot of bluish smoke coming out of my exhaust pipe, especially when doing over 50 mph. Could this be the EGR? (what exactly does it do anyway?) I ask because I recently found the ring of plastic round the top had broken off. Nothing else appears to be wrong though I can see a few wisps of smoke coming from lower down the EGR. There have been a few other things going on which may or may not be relevant. I've been filling the auto transmission and appear to have overfilled it. I found the vent hose wrongly connected to the engine breather box so initially assumed that was the cause of the smoke. However, even with the transmission fluid at the correct level I still get the smoke. Any suggestions?(My car is a 1997 2.5 V6 Tourer which has done 161,000 miles)

It dosent do anything usefull (unless you are a treehugger)  you can blank it off with a steel or aluminium gasket, but I think you have to keep it connected electrically or it can upset the ECU?

imo I wont be much worried for egr..

just blank it off and keep it connected..

there may be other issues..try "Restore" oil additive..

if it helps, piston rings could be worn..

You can blank off the EGR but i wudnt guarantee it'll stop it smoking. Its easy enough to do tho.

As others said it could be somthing more serious.

That's what I'm afraid of. However, it's only started doing it in the past day or two. It wasn't a gradual thing. It suddenly happened, right after I'd been filling the auto box. At first the smoke was so bad I couldn't see anything out of the rear window. Now it's reduced quite a bit. That makes me think it's unlikely to be worn piston rings. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion about blanking off the EGR. I may try that.

Incidentally, my auto box filler plug was impossible to remove in situ. I had to drop the sump and drill it out. Has anyone had the same problem?
