exhaust manifold gasket replacement
« on: 25 July 2010, 21:06:14 »

i think that driverside exhaust manifold gasket is knackerd. The engine generates knocking noise ONLY under acceleration. This is more noticable in low revs.

According to the manuals, the only way to replace this gaskets is to get the engine out. Is this really correct? Is there any other way? I dont want to pull the engine out to replace two 20€ gaskets. The labor cost will be like 10x the cost of parts. :-? :-?

How difficult is this job?

Can something else generate this kind of sound? ERG valve, broken SAI hose or something?

have not done this particular job myself, but another member has done this job in situ by moving the engine around by lifting the engine off the mounts and moving it to the left.

yep.. all the services say that its an engine out job..

however as Mr DTM mentioned, it can be done by turning the engine in its place with the mounts removed..

Vauxhall reckon it's a 5 hour job, so I don't think even they remove the engine to replace the gasket.  :-/

In the Uk, its quicker to do the nearside than the off side (although access is worse).

On the continent you have the added complication of a steering box in the way.

i have talked to the mechanic about this.

he sais that they once replaced a passanger side gasket (bear in mind that i'm on continent), and that it was quite difficult because there is no space, and bolts usually crack.
but they have never done the drivers side, and he also is concerned about the steering box. Does the steering box present an unsolvable problem on UK car?

I'm thinking about having ago at this on my Astra (one at front one behind) other than the gaskets what's best to buy just incase? Never had a problem on the old 1.6 engines, straight off straight on job!
