smokey TD at night
« on: 30 July 2010, 09:39:01 »

hey guys when i floor it at night i can see a huge cloud of smoke being produced in the lights of other cars, i dont think its noticeable in the day as i cant see anything but it must be there, i have tried a fuel injector cleaner but it hasent done anything so ive heard that adding a strong mix of acetone to the fuel will help clean the injectors and then adding a small amount in every tank will help keep the injecotrs clean, does anyone do this and if so what are their experiences of it, thanks

Had a P38a Range Rover that did exactly the same. (Same engine I believe?) Was just a trait of that engine. Had it all checked out and she was fine. Shouldn't worry about it matey.

Try a tank of better quality fuel (not the supermarket junk), see if that improves it after a few miles

ok thanks for that guys, now i know my car is normal, however i dont want it to smoke at night so lets steer the conversation towards the acetone, would it clean the injectors and help keep them clean, improve the burn etc and reduce the smoke

Any 'premium' brand, eg BP, Shell.

I found mine used to smoke heavily on Asda/Tesco, far less so on BP.

For MOT smoke test, I always filled with BP (as thats our local station) before ;)

lol a good dose of acetone????? no way!! acetone in diesel should only be about 0.80cc per litre and thats high dose,
what acetone basically does is allow a better burn of the existing fuel, it does it by changing the surface tension of the fuel, i,e, you always get some heavier droplets sink to the floor of the nlet manifold and also in the combustion chamber, these generally get down past the rings, and contaminate the oil but some are sent out unburnt through the exhaust system,
this is how you see it at night but not during the day, as its a very fine mist mixed with diesel smoke, acetone actually changes the surface tension of the fuel allowing more to be burnt in the combustion process thus better effeciency and less smoke, have a link giving the ful story if you want it

Mine did this, is yours chipped, and do you use Sainsburys city diesel?
Mine still smokes only on hard acceleration. Better now I've replaced the standard chip. And don't use Sainburys diesel, seemed to smoke more with that in the tank.
