Dirty oil!!!
« on: 10 August 2010, 06:41:39 »

I have replaced my engine oil 3 times this year already, not becuase i want to but becuase the oil is getting very dirty after just 2 or 3 months.
I changed oil in february.....then early may and now just last week.

I have been using the  VX oil 10w 40 semi synthetic and alway change the filter as i change the oil...again genuine filters are used.

I know i live in a warm country.. average temp 25 degree all year round. Should i be using a diffrent oil for the region i live.
Any idea of what oil i should use? I take it the genuine vx oil is suitable for cold weather and unsuitable for where i live. Could there be another reason why my oil is getting dirty so quickly???? :(

Any help will be appreaciated

Recommendation here is to change every 3-5k anyway. If it has previously been run on the Vx 10k+ service schedule then you're just cleaning it all out :y :y

I recently bought a new car, its been serviced by the book...

Ive reserviced it all, and changed the oil after 700 miles, and it is digusting.

I expect to do 3-4 very short oil changes before I start getting to the clean engine I want.....  Even then I will be changing it every 3000 ish miles.

If you have rubbish oil / can't verify the servicing I always tend to put some cheapo oil in for a quick flush - something of a slightly higher detergent content does a great job of pulling alot of crap out. Always change the filter though.

For a serious clean out I use a diesel engine oil (its a detergent oil) for  week making sure that the engine gets really hot and a decent thrashing then loosens all the crap. Remember to use a new high quality filter and the genuine VX oil afterwards and all will be well.
I have never had a problem and its far better than ther 'additive' engine flushing rubbish on the market including Wynne's!
Happy motoring.

Could putting Diesel oil in have any detrimental effect on anything?

Never heard this before.  :-?

I don't use Diesel oil, but no I can't see it having any bad effect if used for a flush. Might not want to run it in there all the time as the viscosity would be out. Diesel oil has higher detergeent to help with the coal burning so its good for a flush run.

Beware that a load of detergents in an engine that has been seriously abused may dislodge so much rubbish at once that it will block the pickup strainer and starve the engine of oil.

My advice would be to adopt a sensible servicing strategy and the engine will recover in time. Or flush it aggressively and then drop the sump and clean it and the pickup strainer.

I recently had my V6 sump off for a good clean-out. There were no large pieces but the bottom of the sump had a lot of thick tar like sediment in it. Took blooming ages to clean off I can tell you.
