ABS PCB repair

Hi can anyone tell me if it is possible to remove the ABS PCB without removing the whole unit, I have a fault and traced it to the multi plug and by moving it slightly from side to side the ABS lights come on and off.
I am fairly sure the fault is on the PCB, if removed I feel thaty a repair would be quite easy.

It is likely to be on the wiring from socket to PCB, but that wiring is not possible to get at.  MDTM did post up a pic of the fault somewhere....

Hi thanks for the info but who is MDTM ??
I am not bothered about the ABS or Traction control but would like the speedo to work , has anyone got info as to by passing the abs / tractoin control and alowing the speedo to work ?

The speedometer gets its signal from the ABS sensors.  :(

Hi, can the wheel sensors be tested ? I can drive for 40+miles with everything ok and yet another time its lights on and no speedo from the start but it might come ok when driving. I have removed the rear sensors cleaned them and refitted but still no joy.Has anyone got info on repairing the PCB if that was the problem.

Hi I have excatly the same issue... I hooked up my "My Naff Code Reader" & somtimes you cant communicate with the ECU other times you can - (still in fault condition)... All 4 wheel sensors are working fine, same as you it can be ok for miles, so i assume its the ECU thats kaput, I'm going to investigate the possibility of a repair & if viable I'll do a write-up,
My guess though is you'll need at least a decent soldering iron & possibly some SMT gear - But if it's sh*t or bust it's probably worth a try -
Anyone got a circuit diagram (Internal) ? -
The only other thing thats worth a look is the connector plug -
I came accross a tech bullitin from VX that suggested there was an issue with condensation dripping from the ac pipe onto the plug.... pull the plug - spray switch cleaner (somthing like electrolube NOT WD40) and re-fit (first thing i'll try) - I'll post the results...

Yeh thanks steve ! we sure do seem to be in the same boat. The company I work for has an electronics department repairing pcb's etc but as you say its knowing the layout and understanding how it works. perhaps it is worth having a go but it would be good to have some knowledge of the position of the fault and how to get to it. If I find a way I too will make notes pics etc for future help. All the best & good luck mate !

Is it worth the risk to save £130 and 48 hours?

Must be the season for this as i'm suffering from the same problem!! I've had a look through the maintenance section and can't find a pic of the PCB anywhere. Can anyone put a link up if they know where it is please?

Absolutly Not.... Best thing to do is work for 12hrs doing somthing your good at & earn the £130...
Trouble is the engineer in me can't help it !!
Its the challange  ;D

I can allway's motivate the guys at work by saying "Well mick/dave/clive.... said they could do it" (lets just hope they dont read this....

I felt like that when mine died!! But the expense and hassle of replacing it if I broke it terminally while trying to fix it decided me!! But if you do decide to go for it can I suggest you document what you do (with pics) and post it here for others to learn from?

When mine was repaired it was done so quickly that, given the kit and the knowledge, it can't be hard!

I remembered Mark using the term 'bond wire' which made the search work well.  :)

I had a mate ask me for help on his Polo's ABS recently, found this on a Google search:

The unit in his Polo turned out to be subtly different though, in that you couldn't get the 'tronics bit off the car separately from the hydraulic stuff.  So I gave up.
Bet it was the same problem though. Unit was oh-so-similar  ::)

Thank you all for your input  :y . All the way home today the ABS/TC lights were on and no speedo. I had an idea to see the lights as I fiddled, wedging a shaving morror inbetween the drivers headrest and seat I was able to see the lights while fiddling with the wires. I mannaged to remove the cable tie and plastic cover from the wiring plug exposing the wires, moving the wires didn't make any difference but when I put a finger between the plug body and the unit itself I found that with a little pressure there was a click from the unit and the lights went off. I tried this moving from one end of the plug to the other but it was only whilst applying pressure to the centre part that made it work. I am going to remove the unit tomorow night and hopefully get it sorted. Watch this space lol.
