Dumped oil won't start
« on: 13 August 2010, 15:47:15 »

Help!

Coming back from work my oil light came on so I pulled over. Oil everywhere around the engine nearside, near the filter, and most of it on the ground. Dipstick shows no mark at all. Drove a bit further to another layby but it stalled just as I approached. Now it won't start. Am waiting for recovery but in the meantime, any ideas?

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

Not sure on the reason for the oil loss, but if you drove the car with no oil in, thats not good and could be a large bill :(

Afraid to say that if you drove on with no oil then you've probably knackered the engine :'( :'(

It was about half a mile I drove, is that still enough to knacker it?
What have I probably damaged?

Any distance without oil is not gonna do it any good. half a mile if it dumpped it all that fast could be a really bad thing. :(

I can't really believe you've done that mate? :o IR it didn't stall, more likely to have seized up! Don't attempt to turn it over anymore until you've at least sorted the leak & topped it up again! :'(

So what might be damaged in the engine?

Yep. If the oil pressure light comes on you need to cut the engine immediately, and even then you might not avoid damage. Half a mile will have wrecked the internals, I'm sorry to say. :'(

A better question is what wouldn't be damaged inside the engine.. and the answer to that is.. not a lot!
