Is it worth a try ?
« on: 16 August 2010, 14:33:09 »

My nearside exhaust manifold is now getting to the point where it should be done sooner than later.

I have read more posts and comments about replacing it over the last few weeks than I can remember and most seem to refer to the need to "tilt the engine"on its mounts. Is this really the only way or can it be done just by undoing the bits in the way and then replacing??

I am almost at the point where I am willing to give it a go but its the engine moving bit that worries me as I don,t have the necessary hoist etc.

Guys I am looking for words of inspiration from those that have attempted this .

Broomies Mate, Steve 1564, and myself all have this "little" job to do sooner rather than later, so we all want an answer to this question. None of us fancies doing it either!!

Several major issues do tend to put me off:
1..this contant issue about needing to tilt the engine.
2..what if a stud snaps in the head..then worse off than before started.
3..my car is my means of a living so don,t want it off the road for more than a day.
4..only have axle stands and jack..would ramps be better ?
Don,t even seem to be able to find anyone who would take it on for "money"..well atleast somebody you could trust.

Your choice, tilt the engine, or remove the head.

Use a genuine MLS gasket, rather than the pattern composite type.

If stud snaps (less common on V6 apparently), the head has to come off to extract I would think.

Hi
No hoist needed, use a jack.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Hi alank46.

So is it both engine mounts that need undoing and then lift engine with trolley jack or just the side you are working on ?
